It does not happen overnight: many people find that staying abstinent outside the centre, with everyday problems, is a challenge in itself. Socio-educational support exists for this stage, and the SAVA run by Fundaci\u00f3n Salud y Comunidad (FSC) is a concrete example.<\/p><h2>What is social reintegration after treatment?<\/h2><p>During a residential stay or an intensive programme, much of the day is structured and there are professionals close by. When it ends, the person goes back to managing schedules, money, paperwork, free time and relationships on their own. It is an achievement and, at the same time, a delicate moment: newly gained independence brings new difficulties, and sometimes old ones resurface.<\/p><p>Talking about reintegration does not mean that someone has been \u201coutside\u201d society. It is about rebuilding the areas of life that substance use had worn down, and doing so with habits that protect recovery.<\/p><h3>Common challenges of independent living after an addiction<\/h3><ul><li><strong>Loneliness:<\/strong> moving away from the settings where you used can leave a gap in friendships and plans.<\/li><li><strong>Free time:<\/strong> the hours once taken up by substance use need to be filled with something meaningful.<\/li><li><strong>Money and paperwork:<\/strong> debts, banking or outstanding paperwork can feel overwhelming.<\/li><li><strong>Housing and home:<\/strong> finding somewhere to live and keeping the home organised.<\/li><li><strong>Health:<\/strong> keeping up medical appointments and prescribed medication, and looking after sleep, diet and exercise.<\/li><li><strong>Work and training:<\/strong> looking for a job again or returning to studies after a break.<\/li><\/ul><p>None of these difficulties means that treatment has failed. They are part of the process, and having support at this stage helps protect what you have achieved. It does not replace therapy or medical follow-up: it complements them on a practical level. The idea is for the person to learn to resolve by themselves what they find hard today, with someone alongside them while they gain confidence.<\/p><p>It works best when goals are agreed rather than imposed, when they take into account what each person can manage in their current situation, and when there is a relationship of trust with a consistent professional.<\/p><h2>FSC&#8217;s SAVA: support for independent living<\/h2><p>The Independent Living Support Service (SAVA, from its Spanish name) is an FSC service for people with addictive behaviours who have already stopped using and need support to maintain that change in their daily lives. It offers individualised care: a key professional supports the person on both an educational and an emotional level.<\/p><h3>Who it is for<\/h3><ul><li>People over 18 with a drug dependence.<\/li><li>Who are currently abstinent.<\/li><li>Who need educational and emotional support with the obstacles of daily life, or help finding leisure activities, an occupation and new relationships.<\/li><\/ul><h3>What goals it works on<\/h3><p>The overall aim is to consolidate the person&#8217;s independence and abstinence by supporting them with everyday tasks and problems. Specifically, the service aims to:<\/p><ul><li>Help the person stay substance-free and lead a healthy life.<\/li><li>Maintain the changes begun in previous treatments.<\/li><li>Strengthen independence through healthy habits and projects, setting aside those that pose a risk.<\/li><\/ul><p>Goals are agreed between the educator and the service user, so that they are realistic and fit what the person needs at each point.<\/p><h3>What support it offers<\/h3><p>At the start, the support needed in each case is chosen from among the following:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Personal plan:<\/strong> socio-educational support with personalised goals and psycho-emotional support.<\/li><li><strong>Health:<\/strong> follow-up of medical appointments and prescribed medication, and of habits such as hygiene, diet, exercise and sleep.<\/li><li><strong>Home and finances:<\/strong> help finding housing and support in managing money and household tasks.<\/li><li><strong>Paperwork and resources:<\/strong> help with procedures that are particularly difficult, accompaniment to follow-up appointments and guidance on community resources.<\/li><li><strong>Free time, training and employment:<\/strong> guidance on finding leisure and training activities, and on actively looking for work.<\/li><\/ul><h3>Where and for how long<\/h3><p>Meetings can take place at the person&#8217;s home, in an office set up for the purpose or online. There is no fixed duration: it depends on the agreed goals and the time needed to achieve them, with a minimum of two months and a maximum of two years.<\/p><h3>How to access it<\/h3><ol><li>Participation is voluntary and starts with the person&#8217;s own request.<\/li><li>The person and their referring centre contact the SAVA.<\/li><li>An interview is arranged between the applicant and the person in charge of the service.<\/li><li>If both parties agree, meetings with the key professional begin.<\/li><\/ol><h2>When to ask for help<\/h2><p>Asking for support at this stage is not a step backwards. It is worth getting in touch if you feel lonely or without plans, if thoughts about using come back, if paperwork or debts are piling up, or if you are finding it hard to keep up your routines. Meetings take place at the service user&#8217;s home, in an office set up for the purpose or online.<\/p><h3>How long does SAVA support last?<\/h3><p>It depends on the agreed goals and the time needed to achieve them.
