When someone needs to find an addiction treatment service – for alcohol, cocaine, cannabis, prescription drugs, etc. – for themselves or for a relative or friend, they usually don't know where to turn. If you need a lawyer or a dentist, you usually ask people you know to recommend a specialist. But when it comes to addiction, word of mouth doesn't work because, sadly, people in treatment and their families still tend to hide the fact that they are getting help.

That is why, at Fundación Salud y Comunidad, drawing on more than 25 years of experience successfully treating thousands of patients, we want to offer some guidance to anyone looking for addiction treatment.

That is why the internet is now one of the easiest and most discreet ways to find information about addiction treatment, although you can also turn to your GP, social workers, etc. In search engines (such as Google), people look for information using terms such as “addiction treatment”, “detox centres” or similar, and find dozens of options: centres, clinics and self-employed professionals. Experience tells us that people don't know which option to choose, as they all seem almost the same. The doubt and anguish caused by one's own drug dependence, or that of someone close, cause great suffering, and people want to choose the best option.

What will someone looking for addiction treatment find?

Many private treatment options, some with recognised prestige and experience, others newly created and with a less established track record. Some of the latter are run by people in recovery from addiction who do not always have the medical and psychological training essential for treating conditions this serious. In many cases they require admission to a residential treatment centre. All of them charge considerable fees, and none of them is publicly funded and therefore endorsed by the public authorities.

The Generalitat's free public network for drug dependence treatment, the CAS (the public addiction care centres in Catalonia), where excellent professionals with extensive experience provide high-quality services, but which cannot always offer the speed and regularity of care that this condition requires.

Third-sector NGOs: professionalised non-profit organisations supervised by the public authorities, but often with precarious facilities and teams as a result of the austerity that characterises the sector.
